A Season of Excellence: MV Bands and Performing Arts Reach New Heights

Mount Vernon Bands Boosters proudly celebrates an extraordinary milestone for our MV Bands program. Congratulations to our MV Symphonic Winds for earning a Superior rating at the 2026 Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) Assessment! This remarkable achievement, combined with the Superior rating earned by our MV Marching Majors during the fall season, has secured the MV Bands Program its 14th Virginia State Honor Band distinction.

Even more impressive, over the past decade alone, the program has achieved this prestigious recognition six times—a testament to the consistency, dedication, and excellence of our students and directors.

The celebration doesn’t stop there.

In addition to the Honor Band distinction, Mount Vernon High School’s performing arts community has reached another historic milestone. Our exceptional ensembles—MV Symphonic Winds, MV Chamber Orchestra, and MV Advanced Treble Chorus—have collectively earned the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Blue Ribbon Award for the third time in school history.

This award represents the highest honor in music education for a secondary school in Virginia. It is only awarded when the top-performing ensembles in band, orchestra, and chorus each receive Superior ratings at their respective district assessment events—an accomplishment that reflects true program-wide excellence.

These achievements are not possible without the unwavering support behind the scenes.

To our dedicated families and supporters: Thank You. Your time, encouragement, and commitment play a vital role in the success of our students. This moment belongs to you as much as it does to our performers.

As we celebrate this incredible chapter, we look ahead with excitement and determination. The bar has been set high—and MV is ready to rise even higher.

MV Winter Color Guard Shines at WGI Richmond Regional

Last Saturday, the MV Winter Color Guard stepped onto a highly competitive stage at the WGI Richmond Regional, facing some of the nation’s most talented programs. It was a long and demanding day, but our team rose to the occasion with determination and poise.

Delivering two outstanding performances, the group saved their best for last—their final run was nothing short of incredible and marked their strongest performance of the season so far. In their first appearance at a WGI Regional since 2013, the team earned a 13th place finish out of 18 teams in their class—an impressive accomplishment given the level of competition.

Even more notably, they held their own against elite programs, outperforming or coming remarkably close to several guards in higher classifications—a true testament to their growth, talent, and resilience.
